CASE STUDY

Dr. Michael Boucher

AssessPointe Medical Evaluations

Dr. Michael Boucher is a physician licensed across Ontario, Nova Scotia, Alberta, and the Cayman Islands, specializing in chronic pain management and independent medical evaluations. As a Master Certified Independent Medical Examiner (MCIME) through ABIME, his medical-legal work centres on reviewing complex files to produce accurate, timely assessments for legal and insurance matters, bringing deep expertise in impairment evaluation

and medico-legal causation analysis.

The Challenge

Like many in the IME field, Dr. Boucher’s workflow has evolved over the years, always with the same goal: to extract the relevant information from large files as efficiently as possible.

The process started with physical documents, highlighting and working with a typist, which eventually evolved to converting PDFs for cut-and-paste extraction. The review work itself was manageable, but the challenge persisted: getting the file into a workable format and, once the typed output came back, the time required to check and correct it before diving into the report.

Review time depends on the size and complexity of a file. Dr. Boucher claims, A typical 500-page case could take hours to complete, and I would invest another 20-30 minutes each time a file came back, to catch errors before incorporating the information. There’s a lot of time invested per file; it was time he simply couldn’t afford to lose.

Working With SiftMed

Dr. Boucher had heard about SiftMed through colleagues in the IME community and decided to give it a try. He went through a full onboarding with the SiftMed team and hasn’t looked back since.

Dr. Boucher’s approach is straightforward: dive into the documents, extract what’s relevant, and prepare the report. The workflow hasn’t changed, but SiftMed removes the friction around it, so Dr. Boucher can focus on the case.

The biggest shift for Dr. Boucher wasn’t any single feature; it was the process's control and reliability.

Before, if files got backed up, the reports waited. And often, documents needed another pass. Now when Dr. Boucher finishes a review, his findings are ready to go directly into a report. SiftMed organizes the documents chronologically, and Dr. Boucher can make edits and collect insights in real time as he works. It’s a meaningful shift from the old workflow, where edits only happened after the typed file was ready.

I've been using SiftMed and have seen real improvements. From our conversations, it sounds like there are even more exciting changes on the way that will be really helpful.

The Results

With SiftMed, Dr. Boucher can edit and generate reports as he reviews the files and prioritize tight deadlines - no schedule delays or chasing turnaround times. Assessments move faster, and he stays in control of when the work gets done.

Dr. Boucher has reflected on his previous processes and the small nuances of medical reviews, where technology today can help save time. He has mentioned SiftMed to colleagues in the IME community, for those open to it, his take is clear.

If anyone is curious about trying a tool, I would say: use SiftMed. It is very effective.
